Made In Birmingham Home

We continue our new blog series which follows the Made in Birmingham team as they move in to their new premises in the centre of Birmingham. This week, we hear from Channel Controller – Mark Bos.

Well that was the week that was! It had everything a channel controller could possibly want and more! And with my other hat on as group commercial programming director much more besides!

Monday, interviews, the dreaded barb meeting and yes it can be sharp especially if your show has gone down in numbers and a catch up with a seasoned TV exec who signed my first contract at ITV nearly thirty years ago. Now that takes me back!

Lots of Pitches not the cricket sort, I can only wish that before the summer is out I might get to see some top level cricket pitch action at Edgbaston! But yes commercial pitches for some potentially great new series.

Tuesday out to the NEC and Resorts World Birmingham for another pitch, which we won and now the hard work to make it a reality. What an amazing place! If you get the chance, go and take a look.

Wednesday marketing meeting with most of the team and a few down from Leeds with some very positive ideas on how to spread the word about Made TV. Wednesday was also a full on day in the studio…four shows! Big Engine Debate, Business News, midland sports extra, movie review inserts, a live band recording two tracks, newspaper reviews, blown bulbs, frayed nerves and a very hot studio, and of course the main news with Mr Cool, Calm and Collected himself the very dapper and professional Mike Prince, what a star! The team on Birmingham News worked brilliantly and pulled it off with minutes to spare, little more time next week please guys. Then a pitch to me for a potential new sports series, which looks really interesting.

Thursday a Trip to Leeds to meet with the commercial team and a fantastic agency, pitching two news series ideas. Fingers crossed, we will get to the next level. More work on a couple of ‘live” Made TV shows for September launch. These will definitely happen and will be great to work on! All we need to figure out between now and then are presenters, sets, sofas, editorial tone, guests, lighting, scheduling, editing, who will produce/direct…oh and music, title sequences and who will make the coffee (probably me and sweep the floor).

And so to Friday. Budgets, more creative thinking, paper work, catching up on emails, phone calls, creative briefs, appraisals and then time for cricket, (no not Edgbaston)watching my son play and a beer or two…and relax!.

Even on Sunday I was talking TV as I was introduced to Emmy award winning Andy Walmsley, one of the top set designers in the world who has worked on Americas Got Talent, American Idol, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, big Vegas shows, Theatre and much, much, more. Never a dull day, and then next week do it all again but better!
