Made In Birmingham Home

With the football season just over the halfway mark, we caught up with broadcasting legend and host of Goalzone, Tom Ross. See what he has to say on our local teams, from performances to transfer activity. You can watch Goalzone with Tom Ross, Fridays at 7pm.

Hi Tom, tell us about what viewers can expect from your weekly sports show on Made in Birmingham?

They can expect passionate informed debate on all local and national football issues- with banter, humour, and entertainment- I try to recreates the same situation as if you are down the pub with your mates talking football.

How do you think our top 6 teams (Aston Villa, Birmingham City, Coventry City, Walsall, West Brom and Wolves) will finish in their respective leagues?

Villa, Blues and Wolves will have to wait till next season to make a real push for promotion. Having said that, Blues and Villa say they are still pushing to make the playoffs. What chance do Wolves have of reaching Wembley in the FA Cup? They have seen off Premier League teams Stoke and Liverpool. Premier League leaders, Chelsea stand in their way of making the quarter finals.

What do you think of Villa’s spending over the last year? Extortionate or effective?

Villa have wasted multi millions pounds of first Randy Lerners money and now Dr Xia on very poor players. This has mainly been from bad recruitment policy. Now with Steve Round and Steve Bruce in charge and Ian Atkins looking after scouting they have addressed the buying policy

What is your favourite memory during your amazing broadcasting career?

So many great memories. Blues winning Carling Cup in 2011 final and winning promotion to Premier League in 2002. Villa winning the second leg of the League Cup semi-final against Tranmere. Coming back from 3-1 down in the 1st Leg. Also their European cup win over Milan at Villa Park, which went to penalties. Villa winning the League cup in 1994, beating Manchester United at Wembley. West Brom beating Bradford at Valley Parade to virtually confirm promotion to Premier League at first attempt. Also, winning the playoff final at Wembley, beating Port Vale. Coventry winning the Cup final in 1987 beating Spurs 3-1 – my first ever FA Cup final commentary. Covering Wolves storming through the 4th division (now League 2) with Steve Bull scoring 50 goals per season. Commentating on Walsall in their fantastic League Cup run in the 1980s, especially after they beat Arsenal. Commentating on 1998 World Cup in France. European Campaigns for Blues and Villa in Europa League. Winning many awards especially the Sony’s (Radios Oscars) where the judges say why you have won. Seeing my Autobiography “The Games Gone“in the best sellers, since it was published in August. There are just a few for you.

If you could have any past Blues player in the current squad, who would it be and why?

No question it would be Trevor Francis.

Over the past decade, which club across the Midlands has made the best signing? Who and why?

That really is too difficult because each have made signings that have made a huge impact in many different eras and for different reasons.
